Chapter 14

Roxanne is finally home from her honeymoon, and we’re meeting for drinks tonight after what feels like an eternity apart. Before she accepted Chris’s proposal, she made him promise that he would support our girls’ nights once a month.

I’m dressed in a tight black mini-dress that falls at my mid-thigh. I’m afraid if I were in high school and had to do the fingertip test, I wouldn’t pass.

Hurrying out of the door because I’m always running late, who do I see at the elevator… Harper and Xavier. “Fuck my life,” I say under my breath.

But to them, I say, “Hi. You both look fancy. Off to somewhere nice?”

“You could say that,” Harper replies, giving me no clue as to where they’re off to.

Harper is in a dress that leaves nothing to the imagination. It’s short and sits just below her ass, and a low-cut V in the front exposes her entire flat, perfect mid-section down to her belly button. She has black spiked heels, which make her at least six feet tall. God, I hate this girl. She is the girl who walks into a room and instantly makes every other girl feel like her understudy. It’s not just her beauty. It’s her presence; I’ve never walked into a room and had every person stop to look at me. Xavier has black slim-fit pants, a tight black long-sleeve button-down, and black dress shoes. He looks as good as he smells. But with his all-black, he seems like he should be with me, not her.

Xavier leans over, kisses my cheek, and whispers, “You look smoking hot, baby.”

“Thank you,” I reply as my cheeks flush, which I’m sure is totally obvious thanks to my fair skin handed down by the two people who wanted nothing to do with me. But am I blushing from embarrassment or anger?

“Where are you off to tonight?” Xavier asks me.

“I’m meeting Roxy. She just got home from her honeymoon, and I’m dying to hear about it. We are trying to continue our girls’ night once a month.”

When I say this, Harper smiles. And I have no idea what the meaning behind it is.

Then she says, “Xavier told me all about the wedding when we were doing some planning for mine this week. It sounds like it was beautiful.”

And I guess that was her way of breaking the news that she and Gabe are not only dating but getting married soon.

Skipping past that nugget of information, I ask again, “What about you guys? Where are you off to looking so amazing?”

Harper puts her arm through Xavier’s as if to claim him.

Again, I want to say, ‘Hi, Harper, I’ve been fucking your cousin, and no matter how much you try to claim him, I’ve had him, and I’ve fucked your boyfriend Gabe too… So that’s two for Joy and one for Harper.’ But I don’t because girls like me don’t say things like that to girls like Harper.

Harper says, “It’s one of my co-worker’s birthdays, so we’re all celebrating with him tonight.
